Mr. Cheok Ban Lai is the founder of Agro Farm Technologies Sdn Bhd who is in his sixties. Before he set up Agro Farm Technologies Sdn Bhd, he used to be an engineer and devoted himself in construction industry for more than two decades and therefore, he is experienced in building material supply, construction operation and plumber engineering.
He was raised in a small village which surrounded by nature. His childhood experience fostered his love of nature and he dreamt to own an agriculture farm and grow healthy vegetables since he was young. He decides to do farming out of a concern for the environment and for social justice from wanting to protect and take care of our earth, and to help all people have access to high quality, nutritious food. Even though he is not an expert in agricultural industry, he never stops to pursue his dream. At the very beginning, he owned a small family farm nearby his house, and he made use of the farm to discover the best vegetables growing method and he has successfully innovated his own method to grow vegetables.
One day in year 2014, he went on a business trip to Kuala Kubu Bharu, and out of coincidence, he noticed a piece of land by chance. He was very satisfied with that piece of land as he planned to acquire the land to grow vegetables and to build his agriculture business. He is confidence as he knows that agriculture industry has the potential to be developed in Malaysia as it is one of the great contribution sectors to Malaysia’s economy. He then decided to accept the biggest challenges in his life which made him left construction industry and started his own agriculture empire with a few partners.
Mr. Cheok and his partners never stop to enhance the skills and technology in order to make sure the farm can grow healthier vegetables with higher production. The agriculture business is more than just a job to them, it is a way of life that agriculturalists love. This passion stems from a deep pride in their work and the common purpose that all those in agriculture share to provide the world with quality food fuel feed and fiber. Nowadays agriculture industry requires the use of technology, science and engineering skills. Even though they faced many problems throughout the years, but they never gave up. They consistently do research and find solutions to solve the problems they faced. After few years of hard work, today, Agro Farm has successfully produced large number of vegetables everyday which has proven the great success of Mr. Cheok and his partners.
Minister of Agriculture and Agrobusiness Promote agricultural program certification brand, "Malaysia Good Agricultural Practice" (MyGAP) certification, addresses environmental, economic, and social aspects in order to ensure healthy and excellent quality products. In order to achieve efficiency, safety, consistency, and healthy processing, GAP is an interconnected framework for handling the hazards associated with the aspects of land, input, processes, and performance of agricultural production. MyGap certification has been recognized by many countries and is a quality assurance for Malaysian food exports. Currently it is recognized by southeast Asian countries, China, Japan, South Korea and Australia. Consumer have a greater requirement for food safety in recent years, through promoting MYGAP certification it may let everyone understand the safety and environmental protection of food industry and create a better food environment.
To obtain MyGap certification is not an easy task, Agro Farm has made great efforts. For example to obtain MyGap certification requires reduction of pesticides, fertilizer and environmental protection, and basic welfare and good care for labor. Finally, on 24th of February, 2021, it obtained the Malaysian Good Agricultural Practice (MyGAP) certification.
